“New Alternative Music: FTZone!!” is updated weekly with new releases recommended by the FTZ staff. Here are some standout tracks from the playlist updated on August 14, 2023.
New Alternative Music ◤ FTZone!! ◢
崎山蒼志 / i 揺れる SAD UFO
We have chosen the lead track from the new album 「i 触れる SAD UFO」. The 11-track album includes the digital singles “I Don’t Wanna Dance In This Squall” and 「覚えていたのに」, as well as 「燈」, written as the ending theme for the 「懐玉・玉折」 arc of the TV anime 「呪術廻戦」.
Described as “an autobiographical novel of an album,” it is deeply personal, exploring the relationships surrounding the artist roughly two years after moving to Tokyo.
CHAI / NEO KAWAII, K?
A new empowerment anthem that reasserts the “NEO KAWAII” theme CHAI have championed since their debut. The track comes from an album with a wide range of developments: garage rock built around the drums, bass, guitar and keyboards at the heart of CHAI’s band setup, combined with new-wave elements such as colorful song structures and detailed rhythmic arrangements.
The lyrics also draw heavily on Japanese culture, with references to matcha, parapara and karaoke, conveying the band’s determination to carry that culture forward.
HALLEY / Breeze
HALLEY are a band of five current university students. Since starting out in autumn 2022, they have begun to stand out through soulful vocals, strong musicianship and a funk-heavy band sound.
This is their first music video, and their self-organized event 「in His Daze」 is scheduled for September.
LIL SOFT TENNIS / i have a wing
This track perfectly suits the image of lil soft tennis breaking free from the city’s bustle and dancing energetically beneath an open blue sky. The album “i have a wing” features chelmico and VaVa, along with RY0N4, who also works with lil soft tennis in HEAVEN, and kegøn, whose May single “euphoria” has attracted attention.
AMBR, aryy, chelmico, JUMADIBA＿RY0N4, VaVa and others have also been confirmed as guests at the “lil soft tennis 2nd Album ‘i have a wing’ Release Party,” taking place at Shibuya WWW in Tokyo on Sunday, September 17, making it an event to watch.
