MA TO KI, a four-piece group spanning jazz, improvisation and contemporary music, released their debut album 聞こえない、聞こえる nationwide on CD on August 5, 2026, following its digital release in May.

MA TO KI bring together two string players from Tokyo University of the Arts and a guitarist and trumpeter active in the jazz and improvisation scenes. The album contains 16 tracks combining contemporary and experimental music textures created with acoustic instruments, jazz-derived harmony and improvisation. Their delicate, free ensemble paints a distinctive musical world.

A release show will also take place at Ogikubo's Velvet Sun on Thursday, August 13, with a special lineup featuring drummer 秋元修, also known for his work with 菊地成孔's projects and as a supporting musician for 長谷川白紙.

[MA TO KI COMMENT]

‘There is no groove in this music. Emptiness is our rhythm. We would be grateful if you listened closely to that emptiness and quiet.’

ARTIST

MA TO KI

A jazz, improvisation and contemporary music group consisting of guitar, trumpet, cello and double bass, with members who graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and a music college's jazz program.

福田雄也 (Guitar) — Graduated from the jazz program at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. Studied guitar under 道下和彦 and 市野元彦. Formed the experimental jazz group Klehe. He composes all the pieces for MA TO KI, exploring textures created with acoustic guitar.

堀京太郎 (Trumpet) — Began playing trumpet at 12. Influenced by jazz, ambient and electronica, he explores his own trumpet tones and textures. Has performed with ACO, TAMTAM and 大石晴子, among others.

永田歌歩 (Cello) — Began playing cello with the Kamakura Junior Orchestra at nine, and has worked across classical music, pop and contemporary music since studying at Tokyo University of the Arts. As a freelance cellist, she performs in many settings, including solo work, chamber music, and artists' recordings and live shows.

竹岡きなり (Double bass) — Began playing double bass at 13. Passed the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy audition for the 2020 academic year. Appeared in JAZZin藝大2021 at the university's Sogakudo Concert Hall in 2021.
