HALCALI Are Back, Leaping Across Some Fourteen Years
The grand sound of the entrance music transformed the Spotify Stage at SUMMER SONIC 2026, one of Japan's biggest festivals, in Kaihin-Makuhari, Chiba, into something out of the ordinary. Eventually, the sound shifted into a vivid club tune, and shortly after 16:10 on August 16, 2026, HALCA and YUCALI appeared onstage. In the best sense, they had not changed. Or rather, there they were, utterly charming, carrying exactly the same freedom they had back then.

The opening song was their 2003 debut, タンデム. YUCALI greeted the crowd: ‘We're HALCALI. Nice to see you!’ Words bounced over colorful beats as the two traded lines with ease. In that instant, the memories of the audience who had long waited for them and the new generation who had discovered them through TikTok connected on the same floor. It was their first festival appearance as a standalone act performing original material in about fourteen years, since COUNTDOWN JAPAN 12/13 in December 2012. Yet rather than suggesting any gap, the opening made it seem as though the times had finally caught up with HALCALI's music.
‘Thanks for coming! We're HALCALI. It's been a while! Today we're doing this with two MCs and one DJ, so can we count on all of you to be our chorus? Is there anyone right at the back? We can see you! There are so many of you. Thank you!’ The pair chatted together warmly.

Then, in that relaxed atmosphere, a call-and-response of 「We are the candy hearts、ハルカリズム」 led into their theme song, ハルカリズム “CANDY HEARTS”. Cute without pandering, rapping without trying too hard, they playfully and lightly crossed hip-hop, club music, J-pop and fashion. It was also nice that the lyric 「悩み多き若干15歳」 had become 「30代」. And on the backs of their T-shirts were the words ‘WAR IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT.’ Your important message was received.
A Pop Invention Ahead of Its Time, Only Now Discovered by the World
HALCALI are the duo of HALCA and YUCALI, who had been friends at dance school since elementary school.
They won a female-rapper audition in 2002 and debuted the following year with production by O.T.F (Oshare Track Factory), the unit of RIP SLYME's RYO-Z and DJ FUMIYA. Their natural early-teen personalities met intricately crafted, cutting-edge tracks. They seemed laid-back, yet there was not a loose end. That exquisite balance was unique even then.
The show moved into a special medley of エレクトリック先生, マーチングマーチ and ストロベリーチップス. The bouncing electronics and dizzying wordplay of エレクトリック先生, the beat of マーチングマーチ that made even your footsteps lighter, and the sweet, melting pop quality of ストロベリーチップス: one premium killer tune after another arrived in rapid succession, impossible to explain through nostalgia alone.
The sharpness of the beats, the hooks that stayed in the ear, words that conjured images, and the relaxed groove that only these two could create: music arriving from Tokyo in the Heisei-era 2000s sounded, if anything, new to ears in Reiwa 2026. Watching the audience's energy rise with each song vividly demonstrated that HALCALI had not been called back into the spotlight by a single viral hit alone.

The gateway was おつかれSUMMER, a song on their 2003 debut album ハルカリベーコン. Produced by FPM's 田中知之, it had neither been released as a single nor used in a commercial tie-in at the time. A track with a faint Latin scent, a languid but lovable flow, and the bittersweetness of summer's end: even in a short video, it could change the atmosphere instantly and make the body respond. Its light, addictive quality and timeless, effortless cool fitted surprisingly naturally into a present where short videos intersect with K-pop dance culture.
The Excitement of 9.9 Billion Views Became Music in the Flesh at Makuhari
The figures tell the story of its reach. Total views of related TikTok videos passed 9.9 billion, with more than 7.3 million pieces of user-generated content using the audio. Global K-pop artists including TWICE, SEVENTEEN, NCT WISH, LE SSERAFIM, IVE and NewJeans used the song one after another, and it reached number one on TikTok's Viral 50 in both Japan and South Korea.
On Spotify, it has exceeded 95 million streams and is approaching 100 million, while monthly listeners have passed two million. The official music video on YouTube has 32 million views, and the THE FIRST TAKE performance has also surpassed 6.5 million. It reached number two on Billboard JAPAN's Japan Songs (US) and spent 64 weeks on Global Japan Songs Excl. Japan. This is no fleeting craze for nostalgic songs: it is the result of the music itself being rediscovered and appreciated across borders and generations.
Those enormous numbers turned into real cheers during おつかれSUMMER, the highlight of the day. The opening notes alone made the atmosphere spring to life, and the entire packed floor began dancing to the pair's unforced voices. A sound repeated hundreds of millions of times on the other side of smartphone screens became a miraculous live moment. There was an air of bliss that the word ‘viral’ alone could never capture.

The two reacted with innocent delight: ‘This is so much fun!!!’
But the story did not end there. The finale was ギリギリ・サーフライダー. A beat like jumping onto a wave and the duo's rap carried the audience to another level of excitement. HALCALI have so many powerful songs besides おつかれSUMMER. The meaning of this full return lay in closing the stage by proudly sounding out that fact.
Yes, this was more than a classic song from the past simply coming back to life by chance.
The world had finally discovered the future HALCALI had always carried within them. They consequently recorded the highest attendance at this year's Spotify Stage. On August 16, 2026, beyond 9.9 billion views, a new season for HALCALI began.
