Hokkaido- and Tokyo-based two-piece band flip-flops will release their new single, "sweet liar(s)", on October 28.

A month after their second EP, which explored a fusion of Midwest emo and electronics, the band expand into acoustic territory while carrying forward the textures established on that release. Woody acoustic sounds are layered with grain-like electronic sounds created using synthesizers and granular processing.

The track opens with finely chopped vocals wrapped in a bed of pads. The sound of fingers brushing acoustic guitar strings and intricately moving synthesizers join them, creating a sound in which beauty and tension coexist.

The lead vocal uses an untreated voice without Auto-Tune, while the surrounding backing vocals are processed with Auto-Tune and distortion. The song combines acoustic resonance with the digital production techniques the band have developed so far.

flip-flops

A two-piece band based in Hokkaido and Tokyo, working under the concept of "Far-east Emo". Formed in 2022, they combine their own musical identity with a respect for Midwest emo, which originated in the US, and continue to make music that crosses genres and borders. In recent years, they have also incorporated elements of electro and hyperpop, expanding into a more digital, experimental sound.

Guitarist milano's sharp, inorganic riffs blend with vocalist daijiro's nostalgic melodies to create a world that feels both cutting-edge and reminiscent of Y2K. The band independently handle almost every part of their production, including mixing, mastering, artwork and music videos.
