Tokyo-based experimental unit Kommune has released its debut EP “CARDINALITY” through its label CLEWAXING.
The record unfolds like a story of people struggling with ideals, dreams and conflicts as they live in society. As suggested by the title CARDINALITY and its association with “density,” the release generously reveals the concentration of Kommune’s current expressive elements, with each track showing a unique face, much like the many facets of a person.
Mellow vocals ride beats rooted in dark ambient, with hip-hop, beat music and UK bass at their rhythmic core. Across the EP, listeners can enjoy textures shifting from liquid to solid, letting themselves drift into a sensation of becoming one with the sound.
The varied selection opens with “omen” and “sagasu,” where the harmony between beat and vocals creates the feeling of dissolving into space. “霞” strongly carries on the heaviness of the debut single, with floating melodies and pleasing vocals, while “SWVG” sets industrial sounds and sharp vocals over a danceable five-beat pulse. The EP also includes the advance single “揺” (yuragi), distinguished by its addictive beat.
A release party will also take place at Shimokitazawa SPREAD on September 14 to celebrate the EP.
The event promises “HIGH CARDINALITY,” with no restrictions on the music of the participating artists.
It will bring together artists Kommune has encountered and music that has influenced the unit, including industrial, shoegaze, noise, glitch, dubstep, UK garage, footwork, hip-hop and beat music.

Formed in Shibuya, Tokyo, Kommune is a Tokyo-based unit signed to the creative label CLEWAXING, comprising vocalist meyumo and beatmaker Konfig. Beginning with the May 2023 release “漂流,” they have performed in settings ranging from clubs and live houses to outdoor festivals and in-store events. Konfig’s unpredictable beats, with their distinctive heaviness and electronic physicality, combine with meyumo’s husky, mellow vocal style to create a fresh sound. Their debut EP, “CARDINALITY,” was released in August 2024.
